A 2023 French courtroom drama thriller.
Directed by Justine Triet, her 4th movie. It is a big commercial success, and is universally critically acclaimed.
It won many prices, like this week in the European Film Awards, where it won the prices for best movie, best director, best screenwriters, and best actress.
Earlier this year it won the "Palme d'Or", maybe the most prestigious price in cinema. Messi, who plays "Snoop", won the "Palm dog Award", for the "best canine performance".
Development
Justine Triet wrote the script especially for the main actress, Sandra Hüller, with whom she worked in her previous movie, called "Sibyl".
She also mentioned in interviews that she also used her personal experiences in personal, couple and family life, and also in relation to her professional life as an inspiration for the script.
Courtroom drama
Courtroom drama is a genre where the system of justice plays a critical role in the film's narrative.
Title inspired by the 1959 Hollywood classic "Anatomy of a Murder" by Otto Preminger.
There are dozen if not hundreds of examples, just to name a few: "12 angry men", "To kill a mockingbird", "Inherit the wind", "The Trial", "The verdict".
Beyond
Most of these movies develop the themes of morality, political or social justice, this one does not.
It might be closer, in its themes, to Rashomon (a 1950 Japanese classic movie by A. Kurosawa), which is known for questioning the reliability of the testimonies and the perception of what is "the Truth".
Final note
"Anatomy of a fall" is remarkable for its character development, and the intelligence with which it is conducted, borrowing a lot from the great tradition of suspense thrillers, à la Hitchckock.
Even though it's a fiction, the spectators (us) are also witnesses of the ongoing drama, with partial information revealed along the movie, as members of a virtual jury. Hopefully we won't be asked to give our judgment about the guilt of the prosecuted, but the question of the relation between the justice and the truth will probably remain.
It's another movie that might give more questions than answers, depending on the spectator. All in all, we are very happy to share this movie with you, as an homage to the "good", intelligent cinema, that we love.
