A 1948 American Western film directed by John Huston.
John Huston
Before becoming a film maker, he was an amateur boxer, reporter, short-story writer, portrait artist in Paris, a cavalry rider in Mexico.
Started his Hollywood career as a successful screen writer. He wrote the screenplays for most of the 37 feature films he directed from 1941 to 1987, many of which are today considered classics.
For example: The Maltese Falcon (1941), Key Largo, The Asphalt Jungle (1950), The African Queen (1951), The Misfits (1961), The Night of the Iguana (1964), The Man Who Would Be King (1975).
Cinema's Hemingway, with a keen eye on human nature, he was called a "rebel" in Hollywood. A film historian noticed that in virtually all of his films, there is some type of "heroic quest – even if it involves questionable motives or destructive alliances". In addition, the quest "is preferable to the spiritless, amoral routines of life".
Humphrey Bogart
Nickname: Bogie. Despite his short career (died in 1957), he's now considered as one of the greatest star in Hollywood history. With Lauren Bacall, they maybe the most mythical couple in the history of Hollywood.
He owned a lot to John Huston, starting with his first big role as a Sam Spade, private detective in "The Maltese Falcon". His other private detective role is as "Philip Marlowe", eg. in 1946's The Big Sleep.
Casablanca, The African Queen, The Caine Mutiny.
Film
After the success of the Maltese Falcon, this movie is his second major release. Story adapted from a book by "B. Traven", actually a pen name for an unknown German writer credited with more than a dozen of adventure novels.
One of the very few films where Bogie was not a positive and macho hero, and he shows here other sides of his talent as an actor.
Huston won academy awards for the direction and screen play, while his father Walter (who was a well known actor), and won an academy award for his role.
"I think the camera is an eye as well as a mind. Everything we do with the camera has physiological and mental significance."
